Understanding The Personal Injury Process

3 Things To Take With You When You Go Meet Your New Attorney

If you have been injured on a job site, you may need to have an attorney help you get compensated for medical bills and pain and suffering. If you see an attorney, you have to make sure that you are taking all the necessary information with you to help your case. So, what kind of information should you take with you when meeting with an attorney?

Medical Records

One of the things that you should take with you is your medical records. You want to focus on all the records that arise after your accident so that the attorney can see how the accident has affected you. You may also want to take your records from prior to the accident if you are worried that your employer may try to use some previously established health issue against you. Your medical records are your own, so it doesn't matter what doctor you may have seen. You should also sign a release so that your attorney can talk to the doctors in question. The doctors cannot legally share your medical information without that release, and with it, they can only share the information you choose and only to the people you choose.

Insurance Information

You should also take in your insurance information, including any governmental insurance you may have, like Medicare or Medicaid. In addition, you will also want to take in any copies of bills where you have had to pay any out of pocket costs. Your attorney may not need to have that information, but it is smart to provide it for them just in case. It can be an additional tool in their toolbox, and if they have access to it, they can easily counter any questions or claims that the other side might have.

Your Account

You should also make sure that you have written up an account of the accident from your point of view and a timeline surrounding everything. Do it as quickly after your accident as possible so that you can give them the most exact possible story. This way, your lawyer can get the most use out of it.
